Make parking evidence easier to understand
Build and test a clear district-level explorer from public enforcement records, while keeping history separate from current parking rules.
What you can make
A working offline district explorer plus a worksheet for testing an explanation with a consenting reader.
A builder interested in accessible explanations, neighborhood research or public-data tools.
Start here
Choose one reader and one task
Pick a district and state what you want a reader to understand. Record the limits of historical enforcement counts.
Keep evidence: A specific user task and a source-backed statement.
Create a working explanation
Use the included explorer, edit its accompanying explanation and save a first version.
Keep evidence: A working artifact and a clear separation of evidence from interpretation.
Check comprehension with a person
Ask a consenting reader to try the explanation. Verify any actual parking instruction directly against current authoritative rules.
Keep evidence: Observed feedback and a current authoritative rule source if you give instructions.
Who can take part
- Anyone can prototype using the published public-domain aggregates.
Before you commit
- The dataset covers enforcement history from 2018 onward. Summons counts are not current rules or proof of confusion.
- Only district-level aggregates are included; no vehicle or individual address data.
- This is a Buffalo Projects build invitation, not an official city commission.
What still needs testing
These are possibilities to investigate, not verified findings.
- An enforcement pattern may suggest an explanation or accessibility question. Causes, current need and willingness to pay require fresh evidence.
Evidence you can inspect
- The City of Buffalo publishes Alternate Street Parking Violations - 2018 Onward.
- The source labels the dataset Public Domain U.S. Government.
Retrieval time is not the date an underlying activity occurred.
